Holy Monastery Agarathos - Ιερά Μονή Αγκαράθου

Η Ιερά Μονή Αγκαράθου είναι ανδρικό μοναστήρι και βρίσκεται 23 χλμ. από την πόλη του Ηρακλείου. Η ιδρύθηκε το 10^ο αιώνα από τον Ιωάννη Φωκά. Έξω από την μονή υπάρχει μία Ροδιά όπου οι μοναχοί ανάβουν ένα καντήλι. Λέγεται ότι αρχικά η ροδιά αυτή ήταν αγκαραθιά και μετά από μπόλιασμα από τους μοναχούς, έγινε θαύμα και μετατράπηκε σε δένδρο. Η μονή έπαιξε σημαντικό ρόλο στην επανάσταση κατά των Τούρκων. Από την μονή  έχουν περάσει ως μοναχοί – ηγούμενοι αρκετές μεγάλες προσωπικότητες που στην πορεία ανέλαβαν μεγάλα αξιώματα όπως , οι πατριάρχες Αλεξάνδρειας Σιλβέστρος και ο Θεόδωρος Β, ο οικουμενικός πατριάρχης Κύριλλος , ο Μελέτιος Πηγάς κ.α. 

The Holy monastery of Agarathos is a male monastery and is 23 km away from Heraklion. It was founded in the 10^th century by Ioannis Fokas. Outside the monastery there is a pomegranate tree where the monks use to fire a candle. It is said that this pomegranate tree used to be a Jerusalem sage (scientific name: Phlomis lanata) which after the monks’ drafting turned into a tree, and it was considered a miracle. The monastery played an important role in the revolution against the Ottoman-Turks. A lot of great personalities, who later took important positions, lived in the monastery as monks or as abbots. Some of them are the patriarchs of Alexandria Silvester and Theodore II , the Ecumenical Patriarch Kiril, Meletios Pigas etc.
