Holy Monastery Panayia Halevi - Ιερά Μονή Παναγίας Χαλεβή

Η ιερά μονή Παναγίας Χαλεβή βρίσκεται λίγο έξω από το χωριό Χρωμοναστήρι και χρονολογείται από το 16^ο αιώνα. Γύρω από την μονή υπάρχουν απομεινάρια κτισμάτων φρουριακής αρχιτεκτονικής. Η μονή επί τουρκοκρατίας είχε μεγάλη περιουσία, πάνω από 8000 καλλιεργήσιμα στρέμματα αλλά διέθετε και κρυφό σχολείο. Την περίοδο αυτή οι μονές Αρκαδίου και Αγίας Ειρήνης ήταν μετόχι της.

Η παράδοση λέει ότι ο τότε ηγούμενος του μοναστηριού, μαθαίνοντας ότι οι τούρκοι ήθελαν να πάρουν την περιουσία της ,πήγε στον Πασά του Ρεθύμνου να του ζητήσει να μην προβούν σε κάτι τέτοιο, καθώς από τη μονή ζούσαν πολλές φτωχές οικογένειες. Ο πασάς αρνήθηκε και ο ηγούμενος αναγκάστηκε να πάει έως την Κωνσταντινούπολη για να ζητήσει χάρη σε ανώτερο επίπεδο.

Ο πασάς του Ρεθύμνου το έμαθε και διέταξε να σφαγιαστούν όλοι οι μοναχοί της μονής και να απαγχονίσουν τον ηγούμενο. Σήμερα σώζεται ο μονόκλιτος ναός της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου και λειτουργεί ως γυναικείο μοναστήρι με μία μοναχή ,την Πορφυρία. Το μοναστήρι πλέον είναι μετόχι της Μονής της Αγίας Ειρήνης.

The holy monastery of Panayia Halevi (Virgin Mary Halevi) is located pretty close to the village named Hromonastiri and it was created on the 16^th century. Outside the monastery there are ruins which prove that it used to be a fortress. During the Ottoman occupancy on the island the monastery was quite wealthy, as it owned more than 8000 acres of cultivable land and a secret school. That period, the Arkadi monastery and the Saint Irini monastery belonged also to Panayia Halevi.

According to the locals’ sayings, the abbot of the monastery heard that Pasha of Rethimno wanted to take the monastery’s property. As soon as he heard that, he ran to meet the Pasha and tried to change his mind, as a lot of poor families were helped and survived thanks to the aid of the monastery. Pasha refused, and so the abbot was forced to leave to Istanbul so that his request would be granted.

Pasha then ordered that all the monks and the abbot of the monastery would be sacrificed because of their disobedience. And so, that’s how it happened. Today, the one-aisle temple of the Assumption of Mary is preserved and saved and it operates as a nun monastery, having only one nun living there, named Porfyria. The monastery, belongs to Saint Irini monastery.

Ayia Marina Monastery,Voni - Μοναστήρι Αγίας Μαρίνας, Βόνη

Η ιερά μονή της Αγίας Μαρίνας Βόνης, είναι γυναικείο μοναστήρι και ιδρύθηκε το 1895 από τον Ιωάννη Καπαρουνάκη. Η Αγία Μαρίνα γιορτάζει στις 17 Ιουλίου και συγκεντρώνει τον περισσότερο κόσμο από κάθε άλλη μονή της Κρήτης, με πολλούς πάγκους μικροπωλητών και ουρές αυτοκινήτων για αρκετά χιλιόμετρα. Η παράδοση λέει, ότι σε ένα περίπατο που έκανε ο Ιωάννης Καπαρουνάκης κοντοστάθηκε να πιει νερό και ως εκ θαύματος γιατρεύτηκε από μια ασθένεια.

Στο σημείο αυτό, υπήρχε ένα εκκλησάκι του 14^ου – 15^ου αιώνα, το οποίο ανήκε σε ένα Τούρκο. Του ζήτησε να του το παραχωρήσει για να χτίσει ένα μοναστήρι αλλά αυτός αρνήθηκε. Τότε, λέγεται ότι η Αγία Μαρίνα τιμώρησε τον Τούρκο με μια αρρώστια που έπληξε την οικογένεια του . Ο ίδιος, όταν κατάλαβε τι είχε συμβεί πήγε και βρήκε τον Ιωάννη Καπαρουνάκη και του μεταβίβασε την ιδιοκτησία. Στην συνέχεια ο Καπαρουνάκης έχτισε την μονή στο ίδιο σημείο όπου βρισκόταν το εκκλησάκι, διατηρώντας το στο εσωτερικό της μονής. Η Αγία Μαρίνα είναι προστάτιδα των άρρωστων παιδιών.

The holy monastery of Saint Marina is located in Voni (village in Heraklion) and it is a nun monastery which was created in 1895 by Ioannis Kaparounakis. Saint Marina’s name day and celebration is on the 17^th of July and on that specific day thousands of people are gathered to celebrate and honor the monastery. A lot of market stalls and a big fest is organized in the village every year that day. According to the locals’ sayings, Ioannis Kaparounakis was sick and one day while he was walking, he stopped somewhere to drink some water.

He suddenly was healed by his disease and he noticed that exactly there, there was a small church, made on the 14^th-15^th century. The area where the church was located though, belonged to a Turk. Kaparounakis asked him to give him the small church so as to build a monastery but the Turk refused. As a result, Saint Marina was said to send a severe disease to the Turk’s family. Later, the Turk understood what had happened, he recognized his mistake and he donated the church to Kaparounakis. The monastery was then built on the spot where the small church was initially created. More specifically, the small church that the Turk donated to Kaparounakis was saved and preserved inside the monastery up until today. Saint Marina is the savior saint of sick children.
